Friends of the River Valley provides funding to the Western Maine Foothills Kids Association and area schools to provide winter clothing and gear for students in need.

Between 75% and 88% of the elementary school students in River Valley school districts are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. Many children go to school without winter essentials such as coats, boots, pants, gloves, and school supplies. Miki Skehan, program director at Western Foothills Kids Association, witnessed this issue and reached out to Friends of the River Valley, leading to a 3,000 dollar donation. So far, more than 25 students at Meroby school have taken items they’ve needed, and Skehan believes that number will rise to more than 100.

Additional schools and school staff members will collaborate to provide winter clothing and gear to students at elementary schools across Rumford, Mexico, and Dixfield. Friends of River Valley will cut another check for Dirigo students in Regional School Unit 56, including Canton, Carthage, and Peru.
